BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY RETURNS TO ACTION IN THE MONTH OF MARCH…By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - January 30, 2010 - Big Diamond Raceway celebrates its 39th year of operation in 2010, and a hearty schedule containing over 35 events has been released.

The new year begins with an open practice on Sunday March 21. For many years, the speedway traditionally opened with a Sunday practice session. In 2010, the facility has reverted back to a familiar custom. Drivers will have the opportunity to perform necessary adjustments on their equipment, in preparation for the new racing season. The event carries a tentative start time of 5:00PM.

One week later, the 3/8th mile clay oval presents a double header card of excitement as the energetic Big Block Modifieds kick the new season into gear. By popular demand, the wingless ARDC Midgets complete the two division show. It marks the first of three ARDC appearances in 2010.

A regular Friday night show consists of 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, and Roadrunners. The first points race is Friday April 2. Just one week later on Friday April 9, the 358 Modified feature is a 40-lap contest paying $3000 to win.

History is about to be rewritten at Big Diamond Raceway this year. The O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprint Cars have scheduled an event for Sunday May 2 along with ARDC. It is the first ever appearance for ASCoC at the speedway, and it will mark the return of 410 Sprint-car racing to the Forestville area.

Another historical moment takes place on Sunday July 25 when the O’Reilly All Star Late Model Series tests the Big Diamond clay for the very first time. The popular Winged Super Sportsman division returns, making this double header card a must see event.

The always entertaining Nutty Buddy Enduro Series will enjoy six racing dates in 2010, with the opener scheduled for Sunday April 18. An Enduro series event consists of three separate classes: 6/8 Cylinder, 4 Cylinder, and Ladies Race. The Ladies division is reminded that they will be included on each of the six scheduled events this year.

As the season approaches, remember to check the official track website at www.bigdiamondraceway.com for news and updates.

BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY ANNOUNCES 2009 AWARD WINNERS...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - December 27, 2009 - Big Diamond Raceway recently announced the 2009 award winners from each of their three primary racing classes.

Five different awards have been decided, including::Art Bair Wheel Repair (New Ringgold) Heat Winners, Shiley Fabrication (Williamstown) Rookie of the Year, Insinger Race Fuels (Dushore) Best BDR Newcomer, Seltzer Insurance (Orwigsburg) Most Improved Driver, and BFP Specialty (Bethel) Hard Luck.

358 MODIFIED

Three drivers finished in a tie for most qualifying heat wins in 2009. Duane Howard, Meme DeSantis, and Gary Wagner Jr. each earned four victories. The '09 award belongs to the highest point finishing driver which was the '09 track champion Howard of Oley.

Kyle Follweiler, a second generation racer from Slatington, enjoyed a successful rookie career in a Modified. The 23-year old competitor captured his first career win over a talented list of drivers on August 14. Follweiler (his father Jack is a former two-time track champion) is the 2009 Rookie of the Year.

David Van Horn of Harmony NJ joined the weekly BDR field in '09. Van Horn was a past track champion in the state of New York. He captured his first career Big Diamond Modified triumph on April 24, thus earning the BDR Best Newcomer Award.

Danny Nicholas, a second generation racer from Lebanon vastly improved in the point standings from 40th ('08) to 19th ('09). Nicholas, a graduate of Tobias Slingshot racing, concentrated on his first full season of BDR activity and the results were successful.. Nicholas won the Most Improved Award.

Mohnton's Jeff Strunk won the track championship in 2007 and 2008. Although Strunk emerged victorious in the '09 regular season opener he struggled compared to previous years, finishing seventh in final points. Strunk was involved in a nasty accident at the annual Coalcracker race, perhaps one of the worst wrecks in recent history. Strunk was the Hard Luck recipient.

SPORTSMAN

Andy Fayash Jr., an accomplished racer who has earned feature wins in four different classes, enjoyed a successful 2009 behind the wheel of his #45X. The Mary D based driver was the overall heat race winner with a total of five to his credit.

Jason James of Mohrsville steadily improved during the course of the '09 sesaon and captured his first career victory in the final points race (August 21). While James won Rookie of the Year, second generation racer Brett Kressley of Orefield also enjoyed a feature victory and was the Best BDR Newcomer.

Sophomore racer Mike Lisowski Jr. of Minersville enjoyed an eyebrow raising effort throughout the '09 season. Lisowski, the nephew of past BDR Street Stock point champion Charlie Sorokach, was named Most Improved driver (finished 26 in '08 points and 6th in '09 standings).

Josh Biever of Orwigsburg had been a title contedner in recent seasons, but struggled with all sorts of mechanical issues in '09. Biever was named the Hard Luck Award Winner.

ROADRUNNER

The driver with the most overall heat wins in all three divisions was Joe Hendricks of Auburn. The 2008 co-track champion captured six qualifying heat wins during the course of 2009 and finished runner-up in the point standings.

After stepping up from the Enduro division, TJ Fitzpatrick of Branchdale powered to a final finish of 14th in 2009 points. Fitzpatrick was the Rookie of the Year. Steve Gromis, a forrmer Street Stock racer at the now vanished Penn National (PA) Speedway joined the Diamond Roadrunner talent sheet in '09. Gromis finished 8th in the standings and was the Best BDR Newcomer.

Bernville's Toby Chase advanced from 13th (2008) to 6th (2009) in the Roadrunner standings behind the wheel of his #88. Chase was voted Most Improved of the '09 class.

Jeremy Becker of Pottsville finished fourth in points and just might have been a title contedner had it not been for one night of bad luck. Therefore, Becker won the Hard Luck Award.

Once again, Big Diamond Raceway would like to congratulate the 2009 track champions: Duane Howard (358 Modified), Kevin Beach (Sportsman), Kevin Olenick (Roadrunner), Tom Hablett (6/8 Cylinder Enduro), and Kevin Holland (4 Cylinder Enduro).

BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY MAILING POINT FUND CHECKS FROM 2009, TROPHIES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT A LATER DATE...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - October 17, 2009 - The 2009 racing season was a difficult year for the sport of short track auto racing. The economic conditions combined with foul weather each led to an expensive year for various race teams. As for the weather, Big Diamond Raceway suffered a dozen rain-outs in 2009 alone.

Therefore, in an effort to save race teams money, Big Diamond Raceway will not be holding an Awards Party for 2009. Point fund checks for each of BDR's divisions will be sent through the mail. Trophies will be distributed at a later announced date.

Big Diamond Raceway returns with another action packed season of racing in 2010. Teams and fans are asked to keep checking the official website at www.bigdiamondraceway.com for updated press and news releases cooncerning the upcoming season. Offseason questions may be directed to the speedway office at 570-385-0744.

Big Diamond would like to thank everyone for their continued support and congratulations to the 2009 track champions: Dunae Howard of Oley (358 Modified), Kevin Beach of Llewellyn (Sportsman), Kevin Olenick of Forestville (Wooden Keg Roadrunner), Tom Hablett of Schuylkill Haven (6/8 Cylinder Enduro), and Kevin Holland of Pine Grove (4 Cylinder Enduro).

Media Release from Shawn Fitzpatrick: 9/22/09

This Sunday will mark the final event for the Schaeffer's Harley Davidson/Buell T-102 cars.  Our entire operation is for sale and Tim and I will no longer compete in the modified and sportsman divisions at Big Diamond Raceway. We wish the best to our younger brother TJ!  I’ve decided to write down a few reflections on my past 11 years, the time in which I’ve devoted a better portion of my life to dirt track racing.  Needless to say, I was no superstar, but I worked hard to earn the trust of local sponsors and do my best to represent them with pride and dignity on and off the race track.  I was prepared to walk away from racing when Big Diamond was originally going to close, but couldn’t help but want to be a part of the new legacy that the new management has created.  I tip my hat to Buddy, Dave, and Barry.  Regardless of any critics, you’ve renewed an excitement in racing in the coal region and I will always be proud to say that I’ve competed against the best at Big Diamond Raceway.  I wish you many years of success in the future!

I first need to thank my family for putting up with the countless hours it takes to write proposals, meet with sponsors, negotiate contracts, take cars to appearances, and prepare them for weekly competition.  I won’t even get into the financial commitments!   My crew, especially Ryan, Chad, and Danny… you are the most dedicated group of young men I’ve ever had the pleasure to call friends.  Good, bad, and ugly, you all showed up every week and we always ended each night with a smile!

To the amazing local businesses that I’ve represented over the past 11 years, I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am to have represented you!  There has NEVER been a name or logo on any of my cars that I wouldn’t have recommended to my own family.  The companies I represented are like family and can be trusted to treat their customers fairly.  Thank you to each and every individual associated with the businesses on my cars over the years.  I wish you continued success for many years to come.

To the fans, you truly are the reason racers love to race!  You salute your favorite drivers when they make you proud and call us out when you disagree with our actions on the track.  To the “Hipsters” of the internet world… go get yourself a car and give it a shot.  I’m positive you’ll have a whole new perspective on what really happens in that seat.  I might even jump on-line and provide you with some feedback on your performance afterwards.  Let me be the first to say, that racing is the most difficult sport I’ve ever been a part of!  You truly are only as good as the equipment you race and each and every driver is human.  Mistakes will happen and accidents are almost always unintentional.  The dedication off the track that teams commit to being successful will translate into success on the speedway.  For the past few seasons, with three children involved in numerous activities, my ability to devote the necessary time to prepare cars was limited and it showed.  Racing is no different than anything else in life: You get out of it what you put in...

I will miss the people associated with racing the most.  Driving the car was just icing on the cake.  Spending time with great individuals that grace those pits every night meant more to me than anything.  I disliked no one on or off the track.  I salute the professionals that have made the commitment to race for a living.  You haven’t had a sunny summer weekend to yourselves in a long time!  I also commend the drivers that worked 40 plus hours per week and still made time to prepare cars to compete in on a Friday night.  I know how hard that is!  May God keep you all safe and healthy in all of your future endeavors!

TOM HABLETT,  KEVIN HOLLAND, AND JODY BRENSINGER CAPTURE 2009 ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - September 21, 2009 - Tom Hablett of Schuylkill Haven and Kevin Holland of Pine Grove each captured a second career track championship following this past Sunday's events at Big Diamond Raceway. Jody Brensinger (Orwigsburg) followed up her first career win Sunday with a point title.

Hablett won four out of five Enduro 100 races this year in the 6/8 Cylinder division. His "worst" finish was a second on July 12. Hablett's five career enduro victories is a track leading statistic for endurance races. Back in 2007, Hablett won the Roadrunner point title, therefore it is his second career championship.

By virtue of his third place finish on Sunday, Kevin Holland has become the '09 Four Cylinder Enduro point champion. Holland won the season opener on April 19, and remained within the top three in every race that followed. Holland was the 2006 Roadrunner champion.

Jody Brensinger fell just shy of her first Enduro victory on August 16. In the second Ladies Race on Sunday, Brensinger emerged victorious, thus clinching the track championship.

The Savage 61 Dodge/Dan Drobnick Welding Nutty Buddy Enduro Series has one big non-points race remaining this season. On Saturday October 3, the 6/8 Cylinder division competes in a 100-lap race ($1000 to win if at least 40 cars are present), the 4 Cylinder enduro is 100-laps ($1000 to win providing there are at least 40 entrants), and a 6/8 Cylinder Ladies race will be held. Adult general admission is $8, and racing begins at 6:30PM.

BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY SEASON CONCLUDES IN A HUGE WAY FOR ENDURO SERIES...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - September 21, 2009 - Big Diamond Raceway is proud to announce that the 2009 season finale is a huge event for the Savage 61 Dodge/Dan Drobnick Welding Nutty Buddy Enduro Series.

For only the second time in track history, Big Diamond is presenting an October program. The 6/8 Cylinder (Big Car) division will compete in a 150-lap enduro while the 4 Cylinder (Small Car) class stages battle in a 100-lap endurance race. The 6/8 Cylinder Ladies division completes the Saturday October 3 card.

Providing that the 6/8 cylinder and 4 cylinder classes each pull at least 40 cars for their event, the race winner will receive $1000. That goal of 40 entrants has been met several times during the course of this season. This event will be a non-points show. Adult general admission is $8, and racing begins at 6:30PM.

Anyone who may be persuing the idea of building an enduro car, is invited to visit www.bigdiamondraceway.com.  Complete rules and regulations are presented on the track's official website.

HABLETT AND STUMP SCORE ENDURO VICTORIES AT BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - September 20, 2009 - After the apparent race winner fell victim to an illegality in post race tech, Tom Hablett of Schuylkill Haven captured his fourth 6/8 Cylinder 100-lap Enduro win of the season. Tyler Stump of Mertzotwn took the lead late in the running of Sunday's 100-lap 4 Cylinder Enduro, and captured his first career Big Diamond Raceway win. Jody Brensinger of Orwigsburg won the 40-lap 6/8 Cylinder Ladies Race.

Former national demolition derby champion Vince James and four-time career enduro winner Keith Owens were the early race leaders in the 6/8 cylinder race. Shon Elk, who started 21st, enjoyed superior strength on the outside and grabbed the race lead on lap 24. Meanwhile Pat Hires (who started last - 36th) was performing a miraculous charge through the field. Hires, who was making his first ever BDR appearance, throttled into the race lead on lap 40.

Hires led the race's remaining 60 circuits and cruised to the dominant victory, only to be disqualified in the tech shed. Hablett started 19th. He was actually involved in a caution flag period but recovered and worked back into the runner-up spot. Hablett became the race winner after tech, his fourth career enduro triumph.

Jason Brown (Schuylkill Haven) finished a season's best of second, his third top five finish of the year. Veteran racer Phil Levering (Parkerford) drove his Pontiac-39 to a third place effort. Brad Krause (Deer Lake) grabbed his fourth straight top five finish of fourth. Former Roadrunner racer Kerry Fritz (Cressona) ended up fifth in only his second start of the season. Jeremy Krauss (Mertztown) raced from 27th to sixth. Former Slide Stock racer Doug Naftzinger (Auburn) powered from 26th to seventh, and Mike Benulis (New Philadelphia) made the charge from 22nd to eighth. Ralph Bankes III (Oneida) finished ninth and Chuck Long (Kempton), in only his second ever start, rounded out the top ten.

Chuck Dietzel flipped his machine on the final lap of the event. He was uninjured in the accident.

Gary Grim strapped behind the wheel of a different car this week, the 3G racing #127, and led the opening 19 laps of the 4 Cylinder event. A flat tire forced Grim pitside and Paul Noll, who started sixth, took command. Second generation talent Chris Holland started 10th and took the race lead from Noll on lap 29. Later in the contest, Holland's #8c developed mechanical issues, giving the front position back to Noll with 59 laps showing on the board.

Brad Killian (started 30th) made his third career start and passed Noll on lap 85 when Noll's machine began to lose power. Tyler Stump started from fourteenth. With time running out, Stump sailed ahead of Killian on lap 94. Stump, in his second year of BDR activity, won his first career Enduro 100, becoming the fifth different winner in five races. Killian (Pine Grove) settled for the runner-up spot.

Opening day winner Kevin Holland (Pine Grove) advanced from 17th to third and Joel Matter (Tower City) posted a back-to-back top five finish of fourth. Earl Eichert Sr. (Tower City) enjoyed his finest effort of the season in fifth. Former Roadrunner and Sportsman competitor Lance Hoch (Mertztown) finished sixth and Kevan Schaeffer (Orwigsburg) ended up in seventh. Rounding out the top ten were Chuck Miller (Emmaus), Tony Wetzel (Fleetwood), and Adam Hess (Mertztown).

Tanya Schrader led the opening seven circuits of the 40-lap Ladies Race. Jody Brensinger took command on lap 8 until she was overtaken by Jaclyn Bankes on the 17th lap. Brensinger worked back past Bankes on lap 21 and held her off at the finish. Brensinger was victorious over Bankes (Oneida), Schrader (Orwigsburg), Jennifer Bowers, and Karen Chase (Bernville).

The top 15 drivers in 6/8 and 4 cyl classes were paid for their efforts. Spots 9 through 15 were paid courtesy of the bigdiamondfanpage.com Fans of Big Diamond Raceway. Savage 61 Dodge and Dan Drobnick Welding sponsored the evening's festivities.

One Enduro show remains on the the 2009 schedule. A speical non-points show will be held on Saturday October 3.

THE LAST SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER MEANS BIG BLOCK MODIFIEDS AT THE BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - September 14, 2009 - In 2006, the newly formed Big Diamond Raceway partnership team presented the inaugural Diamond Nationals. The mighty Big Block Modifieds have traditionally been involved in this event, and their participation continues in the current year.

Landis C. Deck & Sons Site Contractors (Bernville) and Yuengling - America's Oldest Brewery (Pottsville) are presenting this year's Diamond Nationals. Five different classes of machinery will be showcased (Sept. 26, Sept. 27), and the Big Block show is scheduled for Saturday September 26.

Although the Big Block Modifieds have seen limited activity at BDR over the years, each program has offered its own form of excitement. Sixteen Big Block shows have been recorded since 1981, when the popular MODCAR tour swept through the Forestville area.

Duane Howard (Oley), who just happens to be the 2009 358 Modified track champion, is currently building a win streak in the Big Block class. Howard won an event in March of 2008, and earned a huge Super DirtCar victory on April 26 of this season. Prior to these triumphs, Howard had ironically never won a Big Block feature at Big Diamond.

The Diamond Nationals dominator has been Whitehall's Keith Hoffman, who earned Big Block victories in the 2007 and 2008 races. Of course, last year's event was scratched due to a weekend rain storm. Therefore, Hoffman is also venturing for the "three-peat".

The Saturday Sept. 26 event will feature a 50-lap main event ($5000 to win). Hagerstown style rules apply with a 2500 pound weight limit after the race. Any 13 - by 92 - inch tire that is readily available from the manufacturer is permitted. Competitors at Big Diamond Raceway are reminded that transponders (which can be rented at the track) and radios are mandatory on race day.

Gates open at 3:30PM on Sept. 26. Hot laps are slated for 5:30PM, and qualifying begins promptly at 6:00PM.

Rule questions may be directed to the track office at 570-385-0744. For complete event information, visit the speedway's official website located at www.bigdiamondraceway.com

RAIN CANCELS THE EVENTS AT BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY; HOWARD, BEACH, AND OLENICK ARE 2009 TRACK CHAMPS...By Gary Lileck

Forestville, PA - August 28, 2009 - Earlier in the week, meteorologists predicted no rain for Friday. Unfortunately, weather patterns changed, and Mother Nature scored another victory at Big Diamond Raceway. Rain fell earlier in the day, and a huge band of showers are planning an evening attack, therefore leaaving the track staff with no choice but to cancel.

Track partner Buddy Biever commented "Although there were times of optimism today, the forecast called for a 100 percent chance of precipitation to move back in between 6-9PM tonight".

The 2009 points racing season has been concluded. Big Diamond Raceway would like to congratulate their '09 track champions: Duane Howard of Oley (358 Modifieds), Kevin Beach of Llewellyn (Sportsman), and Kevin Olenick of Forestville (Wooden Keg Roadrunners).
